March
15, 2009
Dear
Parents,
School
and learning in Room 11 is on the move.
I am excited to
share with you during our conference time
about your child's progress. I will call and schedule conferences
a
week before they begin on March 23-26th. School will be
out at Noon each
day and conferences will begin at 1:00 P.M.
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings will be open for conferences in the
MPR with
translators available. If there is a time that best suits you and your family,
please feel free to call the numbers below and let me know.
We have been working hard
each morning on 2nd grade Math skills like doubling, finding 1/2 or 1/3, finding
the difference, skip counting, telling time, and counting change. We have also
worked on math strategies like drawing a number, using a number line or
hundred's chart, and expanding the number. Later in the year we will introduce
traditional algorithms but for now, creating a strong foundation of place value
is important. The 3 in 2,345 is not "3" but "300".
Reading groups are
solidified and all are working on developing and building on your child's
literacy skills. Building strong phonics base, fluency, vocabulary, and
comprehension are the stepping stones to life long literacy. The Hoover staff
again want to encourage you to read with your children. Mrs. Madrinich in the
library is open before and after school for your child to check out books and
take A.R. test. The A.R. program is an exciting way for motivate your child's
reading and fluency.
I hope you're enjoying
the beautiful Fall in the Yakima Valley. See you in a cweek.

My planning time is 12:00-1:00 each day. Recesses are at 10:30-10:45 and
2:30-2:45. I look forward to meeting you and finding out ways to best serve your
child. I am also available before and after school for conferences.
